MERKEL GEORG

Lemberg 1881 - 1976 Wien

Georg Merkel was born in 1881 in Lemberg. After attending high school he earned his living by painting decorations until he began to study painting in 1903, with the support of a friend, at the Academy in Krakow. His first trip to Paris in 1905 was decisive for him: Merkel remained there until 1908 to get to know the world of classicism. In Merkel's entire oeuvre, Arcadian landscapes and idyllic group images whose "classicism" has moved away by lyrical conception of the coolness of the Parisian models, can be found. Merkel played a significant role as a member of the "Hagenbund" in Vienna and therefore became associated with the "Zinkenbacher Malerkolonie". He was from a member from 1945 on and later an honorary member of the "Wiener Secession". Georg Merkel died on the 24th of November 1976 in Vienna.
